Last year, I found myself settled down in Phoenix, Arizona. There aren’t too many places near enough to Phoenix for a proper weekend getaway, but there is one destination nearby that never disappoints: San Diego.
I was lucky enough to score a Southwest Companion Pass this year, so with a quick flourish of Southwest Rapid Rewards points and a (VERY) early morning flight, JT and I found ourselves heading off to San Diego for a weekend away from the chilly Phoenix winter.
We landed in 75 degree weather and were in absolute heaven. Nothing could get better than this…until we hit the water.
San Diego Sailing Tours invited us to join them on a Sunset Sail during our romantic weekend getaway. The tour included a three-hour sail around San Diego harbor, complete with views of the sun sinking over the horizon, champagne and chocolate.
Our captain, Joseph, made the experience one to remember. Not only did he give us a ton of information about San Diego bay, he pointed out wildlife and points of local history along the way. He was a gracious host and make us feel at home on the sailboat right away.
Our sail was simply perfect. From the warmth of the setting San Diego sun, to the delicious champagne, to the feeling of the wind in our faces as we stared off into the horizon of the Pacific, we couldn’t have asked for a more romantic experience.
While a sunset sail with San Diego Sailing Tours is something that I recommend (hands-down!) for any couple visiting San Diego, the company also offers daytime sails for families and groups of friends. I envision this being a fantastic excursion for first-time visitors to San Diego, as you really get to experience the area from a completely different perspective — the sea!
It would also be an incredible experience for Southern California locals looking to explore their own backyard. I lived in San Diego for four years while in college, and I still learned new facts about the area from our amazing captain. Not to mention, there is something so magical about seeing the evening lights begin to glow on the San Diego coastline. It is truly an unparalleled experience!
